Get involved with Sequoia Audubon and help the birds with some of these volunteer opportunities. Update our SF Peninsula Bird Guide for the 21st Century
SAS needs assistance updating its local birding guide, San Francisco Peninsula Birdwatching. First published in 1984 and revised in 1996, it stands as a major accomplishment of Sequoia Audubon Society. It is time to create another revision and place it on-line at the Sequoia Audubon website. This is a major project, which will develop and change over time. The project will begin with scanning the contents of the 1996 edition and then gradually updating the info. We will update one birding site at a time, so we need lots of help with many different small jobs. Help take a small piece of this important project.
Updating birding information.
Visit birding sites around the Peninsula.
Help with an inventory of habitats, flora and fauna.
Double check local area bird records for correctness.
Help prepare visual materials and copy for the web.
Update location maps; and find pictures and information about SM County birding sites.
If you have computer knowledge (or want to learn), or if you are a birder with knowledge of local sites or are interested in bird populations, we need your help getting this project onto the web.
Possible college credit/internship for students.

Fund Raiser
Help keep SAS going and ensure that we have sufficient funds for our programs. Help write our annual fundraising letter to our members. Help with the birdseed sale and silent auctions. Think of new ways to increase donations to SAS. Make fundraising FUN.
Requirements: Ability to communicate to our members by phone or in writing. Grant-writing ability a plus but not required.
Time: Few hours per month.
Location: Work from home or at the SAS office.

Sequoia Audubon Board of Directors
Want to direct the activities of SAS? Do you have leadership abilities? Be part of a working Board of Directors to guide SAS to be the best organization possible.
Requirements: Commitment to Sequoia Audubon. Interest in birds, birding and nature. Previous leadership experience a plus but not required.
Time: Attend a once a month Board meeting. Other meetings as needed.
Location: Meet at Woodside office once a month.
Note: Must be voted into office by Sequoia membership.

Help Restore Pescadero Marsh
Play an active and vital role in habitat restoration. Help to maintain trails, remove invasive plants, build new trails, and plant California native plants.
Requirements: A pair of working gloves and enthusiasm. Be ready to have fun, work hard and help the environment. No experience required.
Time: We will meet one Sunday a month for about 3 hours.
Location: Pescadero Marsh on the San Mateo County Coastside

Field Trip Leader
Do you have a favorite birding spot you want to share with others? Enjoy teaching people about birds and birding?
Requirements: Love of birds and birding, and willingness to share your birding knowledge.

Pescardero Marsh Docent and State Park Volunteer
Are you interested in a docent program for marsh interpretive walks or marsh restoration and trail maintenance? Sequoia Audubon was instrumental in protection of Pescadero Marsh. This area is of great importance for migrant shorebirds and a wintering ground for waterfowl and marsh birds.
Requirements: Interest in helping to preserve a beautiful marsh on the Pacific Flyway and help others learn about the wildlife and birds at the marsh. Able to attend training class.
Location: Pescadero Marsh on the San Mateo County coast.
Time: Few hours each week.

Community outreach/Education Coordinator
Help teach the community and share your knowledge of birds and birding by representing the SAS at various community events and schools.
Requirements: Enthusiasm for sharing your love and knowledge of birding and SAS.
Location: Various community locations, may include,schools, parks, senior centers and birding events.
Time: 3-4 Hours per month.

Bird Surveyor
One of the ways SAS protects birds and habitats is the Edgewood Park & Preserve Bird Conservation Program. It's like practicing for the Christmas Bird Count all year round!
Requirements: A good pair of binoculars and a morning mentality.
Location: Edgewood Park & Preserve, San Carlos.
Time: Conduct one 3.5-hour bird survey a week/month (flexible), hiking over moderately hilly trails sectioned into 9 monitored zones. Report the findings to BCP coordinator, Lee Franks, for compilation in the annual report.

Bluebird Box Monitor
Help restore Bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds in San Mateo County by volunteering to monitor Bluebird nest boxes. Be part of the California Bluebird Recovery Program.
Requirements: An interest in helping the recovery of Bluebird populations in San Mateo County. A willingness to lean about care of nest boxes.
Location: At nest box sites. At your house or locations in San Mateo County
Time: Monitor nest boxes one day a week on your schedule. (15 minutes to 1 hour +)

Letter Writer
Be an Armchair Activist and help support conservation issues that effect birds and the environment. Handwrite letters to your public officials on important conservation issues. We help give you ideas on what to write.
Requirements: Interest in environmental issues and willingness to write a letter to public officials.
Location: Your home.
Time: 15 minutes to 1hour per month

Exhibit/Display Designer
Create and design an exhibit for public libraries and schools to teach the public about birds and birding. Help to spread the news about Sequoia Audubon and birding.
Requirements: Artistic ability.
Time: 1-8 hours per month at your convenience

Meet and greet at Audubon Canyon Ranch for a Day
Be a greeter at the Audubon Canyon Ranch where Great Blues, Great Egrets and Snowies nest. Before you volunteer, have the preserve to yourself to observe these beautiful birds on their nests.
Requirements: Do you like to meet people? Do you like birds?
Time: One weekend day in May or June, 9:30, 4:00 PM on the day you select.

Clinic Volunteer
Wildlife Rescue, Inc is looking for "Clinic Volunteers" to help rehab injured and/or orphaned wildlife. Most of the 2000+ animals we take in each year are birds (the rest is small mammals).
Clinic Volunteer: The Clinic Volunteer works hands on with injured and orphaned wildlife in our facility. A large amount of animal care is handled by this position. Mainly the Clinic Volunteer is responsible for the day to day care including feeding and weighing of animals, recording information on progress notes, medicating animals according to med slips, maintaining animal enclosures, including cleaning and stocking and other general tasks. Clinic Volunteers are required to commit to one shift per week, shifts are available 7 days a week and are as follows -Early Morning 7am-9:30am Morning: 9am-2pm,Afternoon: 1:30pm-6pm, Evening: 5:30pm-10pm. Full training is provided and classes are offered through out the year.

Founded in 1974, Wildlife Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our important work miscarried out by a small core of paid employees and a large number of dedicated volunteers. Wildlife Rescue has over 1,000 members.
The mission of Wildlife Rescue is to serve the community by instilling an awareness of and appreciation for local wildlife and by providing are source for wildlife rehabilitation. We care for, owls, doves, water birds, songbirds, squirrels, opossums and other injured and orphaned local wildlife. We also offer educational programs that teach respect for all living things, with the goal of encouraging a harmonious co-existence between humans and wildlife.
