Here is an update for January. Several birds were reported to me after this list was published, so we actually had 213 collective species for the month of January. We also had a new bird for the county (#450), Iceland Gull, which was seen by two different observers: John Sterling on January 21 (San Gregorio State Beach) and Rich Stallcup on January 25 (Venice State Beach). These were reported indirectly through George Chrisman. In addition, observers sent in belated sightings of Bullock's Oriole, Yellow Warbler and Tree Swallow. It has also been recommended that we publish each month about a week after the start of the month to allow for late reports. Please remember to report all sightings to Pen Bird or to me directly. As usual, corrections are welcomed. — Kris
January 2009
This is our first effort to track the birds seen each month in San Mateo County. Since I am not the official county record keeper, I am relying heavily on Peter Metropulos, record keeper, as well as Rich Ferrick and Chuq Von Rospach, who are part of this informal tracking committee, as well as many wise and experienced birders and record keepers: Alvaro Jaramillo, Joe Morlan, Ron Thorn, David Suddjian (Santa Cruz) and Bill Bousman (Santa Clara, whose format we are copying.) San Mateo is particularly lucky to have 3 current or former members of the California Birds Record Committee: Alvaro, Joe and Dan Singer. We are also grateful to the Sequoia Audubon Society (SAS) for publishing this data.
OK, onto the birds. First, each bird has been giving a rarity rating, based on Peter’s codes on the San Mateo County Checklist, published by SAS.
1 = Common to abundant in appropriate habitat, always present in large numbers
2 = Fairly common, always present in moderate to small numbers
3 = Uncommon, usually present and in small numbers
4 = Rare, observed in very small numbers and perhaps not in each year
5 = Extremely rare, fewer than 10 records of occurrence in season indicated
6 = Accidental, recorded fewer than 10 times in San Mateo County and offshore watersPercent of Total County List:
1 = 80 birds = 18% of list
2 = 91 birds = 20% of list
3 = 44 birds = 10% of list
4 = 94 birds = 21% of list
5 = 38 birds = 8% of list
6 = 101 birds = 23% of listThe county has 448 on the San Mateo checklist plus one new species, the Black-tailed Gull, seen in December. Of the 449, 102 are accidental or extirpated (Greater Roadrunner), leaving 347 species rated 1-5 (meaning, somewhat easier to see!). Nesting evidence exists for 172 species.
January results:
We finished January with 208 birds seen on the composite list. We won’t know if that is high or low until we have several years of history, but it’s 46% of the total county list. The list got off to a great start with some eager birders out January 1st and 2nd plus the Año Ñuevo Christmas Bird Count on January 3. On the ANCBC, one “6” was found, a Brown Thrasher on private POST land. Several Sequoia Audubon volunteers arranged for a month of trips for more birders to see this bird. Peter Metropulos found a “5”, Prairie Warbler, also on private land, and Al De Martini found another “5”, a Black-vented Shearwater, off Pigeon Pt.
In addition, twelve “stake-out” birds (all “4”s) were quickly seen: Tropical Kingbird, Northern Waterthrush, Long-tailed Duck, Redhead, Eurasian Wigeon, Blue-winged Teal, Harlequin Duck, Red-necked Grebe, Black Scoter, Burrowing Owl, American White Pelican and Osprey.
For those of you interested in joining the search for county birds, there are three #1s left to find, none of which is here yet (Sooty Shearwater, Cliff Swallow and Wilson’s Warbler) plus 30 “2s” (many are not here yet or require sea watches). There is one relatively accessible “4” left – Ring-necked Pheasant; try O’Connor pond in East Palo Alto (end of O’Connor St.) You may see a Wilson’s Snipe in the pond as well.
I am sure there are many errors and omissions on this list—wrong AOU order, wrong codes, wrong dates, wrong observers, missing observers and birds – so please feel free to gently send corrections to Kris Olson.
If you are interested in learning more about San Mateo County birding, Joe Morlan’s California birding pages has a fascinating collection of information – including the most species seen by one person in one year (Ron Thorn, 304 in 2001) and a list of places to bird in the county. The Sequoia Audubon site also has more and more useful information plus great field trips.
