Three new species arrived in San Mateo County during the month of December. The first was the discovery of a HARRIS'S SPARROW at the now famous "Brussels Sprout Dump" at the Cascade Ranch near Ano Nuevo by Ron Thorn, Leonie Batkin, and Michael Scott on 12/11/11. This bird remained throughout the month and was highly photographed and observed by many. It cooperated long enough to be counted during the Ano Nuevo Christmas Bird Count on 12/31/11. The brussels sprout dump along Cascade Creek is a magnet for many warblers and sparrows, and was also the location for the discovery of the year's only VESPER SPARROW sighting on 12/23/11 by Kent Johnson, who was there chasing the Harris's Sparrow.
The only other new sighting was observation of three SHORT-EARED OWLS at Wavecrest by Jennifer Rycenga and Gary Deghi on 12/17/11 during the Crystal Springs CBC. Short-eared Owl has become increasingly difficult to find in the County, so the presence of three for the CBC was especially exciting.
The addition of 3 new species for month of December brings our total to 334 species observed in the County for the year. That is one less than our 2009 total of 335 species.
