Peninsula Birding on Yahoo GroupsJune 2010
June 2010 added seven exciting new birds to the San Mateo County Year List. On the June 5 Palo Alto Summer Bird Count, Ron Thorn and Leonie Batkin found a male SUMMER TANAGER at Jasper Ridge Preserve near Searsville Lake. The Palo Alto count circle includes some areas in southern San Mateo County including the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve in Portola Valley, which is part of the Stanford University campus. The Summer Tanager, rarity code 5, was not subsequently reported after that date.
Also on June 5, Peter Metropulos discovered a singing NORTHERN PARULA near the Crocker Gate of San Bruno Mountain County Park. This area proved to be a county hotspot for June, with the continuation of a singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak and the discovery of two singing GRAY CATBIRDS found on June 20 by Herb Brandt in the same area. The Gray Catbirds (Rarity Code 6) were found and photographed throughout the week by many observers, with the last reported occurring on June 26. A second Northern Parula was reported by Peter Humphrey on June 9 near the Village Pub in Woodside.
And finally, some vagrant warblers began to appear along the coast. On June 14, Ron Thorn discovered a bright male PROTHONOTARY WARBLER on Verde Road near the Lobitos Creek cutoff. A HOODED WARBLER was found by David Suddjian on June 17 along the Pomponio Trail in Memorial County Park. And Garth Harwood observed a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER in his yard in Pescadero on June 26.
The final addition for June was the report of a handful of BLACK SWIFTS observed during a field trip at Ano Nuevo State Preserve led by Gary Strachan on June 26. The Black Swifts are a rare breeder in the county, so their continuing presence into early July is promising.
In addition to the seven species added for June, there are three late additions to the county list from a pelagic trip on April 30. Ryan Merrill of Kirkland, WA reported a MURPHY'S PETREL, several COOK'S PETREL, & one PARAKEET AUKLET on eBird. Subsequent follow-up included several outstanding photos of both Petrels. The reports are very credible with multiple observers taken during 20 minute transects on a voyage between Long Beach, CA and Vancouver. The San Mateo County records are taken from transects recorded 40-50 miles offshore in San Mateo County waters.
The result is seven additional species for June in San Mateo County for 2010, bringing us to a total of 278 year to date. That is 10 species behind our 2009 total. If you have seen any birds not recorded on the list, please email me at Geodani55@yahoo.com. I will look forward to hearing about all of your new sightings and encourage you to post all notable sightings to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/peninsula-birding/ or www.eBird.org.Good Birding,
George Chrisman
